These 1990s & Early 2000s Movies Will Have You Feeling Nostalgic

Please don’t spoil the movie is a movie podcast that dives into classic films, giving entertaining recaps and spoilers. Here are our top 90s and early 2000s movies.

Movies from the 90s and early 2000s had a certain kick to them. Maybe it was the finicky VHS tapes you had to rent or buy to watch them. Or, perhaps, it was the simple joy of wandering the aisles of BlockBuster on a Friday night with the smell of popcorn penetrating the air. Today’s streaming platforms could never replicate such a niche experience, but we can still relive the joy that 90s and early 2000s movies have brought us over the years.

Please Don’t Spoil the Movie is a podcast about movies that discusses these classic movies at length. Here are some top 90s and early 2000s movies to stream for your next movie night.

1. A Cinderella Story (2004)

A Cinderella Story is a time capsule for all things early 2000s, casting some of the biggest names in Hollywood at the time, like Hillary Duff, Jennifer Coolidge, and Chad Michael Murray.  In this modern spin on the classic tale, Hillary Duff plays Sam, a janitor and dishwasher, at her stepmom’s (Jennifer Coolidge) diner. After beginning an anonymous relationship over text with Austin (Chad Michael Murray), the cutest boy in school, Sam realizes she needs to make a perfect impression on him at the upcoming school dance.

2. Mean Girls (2004)

There’s no debating that Mean Girls is one of the most quotable movies of the early 2000s (does “She doesn’t even go here!” ring a bell?) Starring Lindsay Lohan, Mean Girls plays on the classic tropes of petty high school drama while inserting a grain of truth. The plot follows the main character, Katy Heron, a new and formerly homeschooled student, as she navigates becoming a part of the most popular clique in school, “The Plastics,” played by Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chalbert.

3. The Parent Trap (1998)

Many may not realize The Parent Trap is a remake of 1961’s film of the same name. In this version, we see Lindsay Lohan playing both starring roles of twins Hallie and Annie with the help of clever CGI technology (not to mention Lindsay Lohan’s superior acting chops). The movie follows the twins as they first learn of each other’s existence at summer camp, eventually forming a bond. From there, they devise a brilliant plot to bring their parents (Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid) back together before their dad remarries.

4. 50 First Dates (2004)

50 First Dates is an Adam Sandler classic we won’t soon forget (no pun intended). The main character, Henry (Adam Sandler), plays a marine veterinarian in Hawaii who falls for Lucy, a stunning woman he meets at a beachside cafe. There’s just one little problem, however. Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss following an accident, and each day, Henry must make her fall in love with him all over again.

5. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

As one of the most well-known late 90’s movies, 10 Things I Hate About You features classic teen angst with a romantic twist. The plot revolves around the main lead, Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles), who has no interest in dating. Her younger sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), who is forbidden from dating until Kat begins dating, is forced to come up with a solution when she meets her perfect match, Cameron (Joseph Gordan-Levitt). This is when we see Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) enter the picture - a mysterious bad boy who had been paid off to steal Kat’s heart.

Five Must-See Teen Movies From The 2000s

Five Must-See Movies From The 2000s. From Bring It On to Mean Girls, the 2000s had some of the best teen movies that ever graced the big screen.

Nothing gets me in the best mood like a high school movie from the 2000s. There are so many good 2000s movies from sci-fi thrillers like Freaky Friday to drama films like Princess Diaries. It was hard to choose but these are a few of my favorite coming-of-age teen movies from one of the greatest teen film eras.

  1. Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls is one of the most iconic movies from the 2000s and is personally one of my favorite movies of all time. Lindsay Lohan who plays Cady Heron gets a hard lesson of what it’s like being an American teenage girl after having spent her whole life homeschooled in Africa. Cady Heron's social life gets a huge makeover when she is chosen to be a part of the hottest clique in high school, The Plastics. This 2004 comedy film is filled with so many memorable scenes, like when the Plastics perform at the Christmas talent show or when Janis gives Cady a breakdown of all the social groups at their high school. And even if you have never seen the film, I’m sure you’ve heard one of its many quotable lines. Such as “You Don’t Even Go Here,” “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink,” “That is so fetched,’” If you’re from Africa, why are you white?” You go, Glen Coco!” and so many others. If you haven't seen Mean Girls or feel like reminiscing, listen to our first-ever podcast episode where we recap this iconic film.

2. John Tucker Must Die (2006)

If you like films where a group of girls get together to inflict pain on a well-deserving serial cheater, then John Tucker Must Die is the perfect film for you. This film is about a group of teenage girls who plot to break the heart of John Tucker, the school’s basketball star after they find out he’s been secretly dating each girl. Most teenage movies involve some popular guy accepting a bet to turn the loser girl at school into a prom queen, but this is one of the few films of its type that we see the girls scheming instead. And I love that! This is a fun movie to watch, relax, and be entertained. Also, a scruffy younger Penn Badgley is in it and he’s not playing a serial killer so you can gush over him without feeling guilty.

3. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004)

Lindsay Lohan stars in another 2000s teen comedy movie, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. That girl was a teenage drama queen on and off the big screen and Lohan is a legend for it. In this film, Lohan plays Lola, an aspiring teenage actress, whose dream of making it big is setback when her family moves from New York City to the suburbs of New Jersey. Don’t let the rotten tomatoes rating fool you, this movie is lovely and enjoyable. Lola accomplishes every teenage girl's dream of meeting her favorite boy band, fights for attention with the school’s popular girl who is played by Meghan Fox and achieves her dream of becoming a star.

4. Sleepover (2004)

Everyone loves an underdog story and Sleepover the 2004 teen film starring Alexa PenaVega is just that. PenVega who plays Julie is desperate to upgrade her social status when she and her friends agree to take part in an all-night scavenger hunt against the popular clique in their high school. Julie’s crew though lovely girls are not THOSE girls at their high school so when they are given the chance to secure the most exclusive lunch table at their school by winning the scavenger hunt, they don't pass up the opportunity. The girls must do things like steal a pair of boxers from the hottest guy at their school, change the clothes of a store mannequin, and sneak into a nightclub. Check out this film if you want to see the outcasts win and Evan Peters playing someone happy.

5. Bring It On (2000)

Bring It On is another great teen movie that came out of the 2000s era. Bring it On starring Kristen Dunst as Torrance and Gabrielle Union as Isis are cheerleading captains of rival schools. Torrance is distraught when she discovers that the Torros' previous captain stole all of their routines from Isis’s cheer squad the East Compton Clovers. And chaos ensues when the Clovers say no more and the Torros must actually come up with their own original routine. GASP. Not only did this film address cultural appropriation before we were addressing cultural appropriation, but this film also launched a cheer franchise. Stars like Solange, Christina Milian, Hayden Panettiere, and many others have joined the cast over the years to shoot their shot of being as amazing as the original. But there is only one number one. Bring It On still to this day is a fan favorite and a staple of its generation. Check out our Bring It On podcast episode where we recap this iconic film.

Mean Girls

A recap of the iconic 2000s coming of age movie Mean Girls.

Mean Girls

That Is So Fetch!

For our very first episode of Please Don’t Spoil the Movie we recapped a movie that was a staple growing up, Mean Girls. If somehow, you’ve never seen this glorious film of the 2000s, Mean Girls is a coming of age moving starring Lindsey Lohan (the it girl of her time) who plays Cady Heron. The film follows Cady who is fresh off the boat from Africa and must adapt to the mean streets of American high school.

Cady who arrives on her first day of school is clearly overwhelmed by this transition. Luckily enough soon Cady gets adopted by two lovely outcasts, Janis, and Damian, who teach her the way of high school. But it is when Regina George, the leader of The Plastics, is charmed by the new girl and asks her to join the hottest girl group on campus that Cady gets a quick lesson on the twisted minds of high school girls.

Cady not sure what the hell is going on agrees to continue hanging out with the Plastics to help Janis fulfill a long-awaited revenge fantasy. Janis who was once besties with Regina wants payback after her social status plummeted when Regina spread a rumor that Janis was a lesbian. The stars aligned, and the clouds opened, and god looked down at Janis and said, “crucify that bitch.”

Cady the shy foreign white woman that she is isn’t fully committed to the plan, that is until she makes the mistake of liking the same guy that Regina used to like. And despite getting the necessary approval needed to date a friend’s ex-boyfriend Regina decides “meh I changed my mind you can’t have him.” Regina George gets back with her basic-looking boyfriend Aaron Samuels leaving Cady heartbroken.

Cady now sees Regina for the evil being that she is and joins Janice’s forces in destroying her life. Throughout the movie, we see Cady, Janis, and Damian devoting all their time to coming up with plans to end Regina George. They’re switching out smelling good lotions with other smelling good lotions, they’re making her eat protein bars and telling her that bread doesn’t make you fat, and they’re creating new trends where you cut out holes in your shirt so you can show off your colorful bras. Yet somehow after all this Regina is still loved, feared, and worshiped by all her peers.

It’s not until Regina is betrayed by her most loyal friend that the cracks in her foundation began to get more cracks and things break and stuff. Gretchen Wieners the clear number two in the group is not handling the ups and downs that come with being Regina’s flunky and starts to spill secrets about her dearest friend. The most damaging being that Regina is cheating on her vanilla boyfriend with a wrestling player.

And Cady now a double agent uses this intel to end Regina’s relationship with her boring boyfriend. Now that Regina is boyfriendless and eating plates and plates of bread Cady is slowly moving up in the ranks and the Frankenstein that Janis created is now roaming free. Everything comes to head when Regina sits down at the plastic lunch table wearing a velvet track suit on a day she is not allowed to. And with the “You just can’t sit here” heard around the whole cafeteria Regina is officially kicked out of the clique she once ruled.

Now with Regina out Cady is chosen to take her place. And with great power comes a lot of bullshit. Cady begins to crumble under the pressures of balancing her double life, getting Aaron Samuels to like her and math. And just when Cady thought it couldn’t get worse. Regina decides if she’s not happy no one is going to be! Regina comes up with a Dexter-level plan to distribute copies of the infamous burn book that contains mean but true comments about every girl in the yearbook.

Some of the most notable comments are that Amber D’Alessio made out with a hot dog, Damian is too gay to function, and Trang Pak made out with Coach Carr. The rumors and accusations send the girls into a rage, and they all turn on one another. Once the outbreak is contained all the girls are ordered into the gymnasium to discuss their feelings. It is here Janis decides to take this opportunity to confess her sins as she reveals her scheme to tear down Regina. To which Janis is praised by her community. Cady still somewhat of a human being tries to apologize for her cruel actions but it falls on death’s ear once Regina is hit by a rogue school bus.  And she dies…the end!

Just kidding…wouldn’t that have been a crazy ending?

Regina in fact survives her terrible accident. Which pushes Cady to start the process of writing her wrongs. Cady redeems herself by being really good a math, taking full blame for the burn book, and sitting behind a guy who farts a lot in class. The universe accepts her sacrifices and awards her with winning prom queen and finally getting the “hottest” boy in high school (the bar is in hell).

And they all live happily ever after until they turn like 25 and life starts to get really hard…

There’s no denying how iconic the movie that brought us “She doesn’t even go here,” “You go Glen Coco,” and “On Wednesday’s we wear pink” is. Mean Girls is a movie that we always love to revisit. Check out our Mean Girls podcast episode where we recap the movie and discuss our favorite scenes, shocking moments, and the film’s impact.

And remember if you’re a mean girl you WILL get hit by a school bus.
